Zhejiang University Institute of Ancient Books
The predecessor of Zhejiang University Institute of Ancient Books was the Hangzhou University Institute of Ancient Texts Studies, established in 1983 by renowned scholars such as Jiang Liangfu, Xu Gui, and Shen Wenzhuo. It was one of the twenty-four ancient texts research institutions under the National Commission for Ancient Chinese Classics Editing and Research by Institutions of Higher learning, Ministry of Education.It boasts many distinguished experts, including “Changjiang” Distinguished Professor appointed by the Ministry of Education, Distinguished Honorary Professor at Zhejiang University, “Dunhe” Chair Professors, “QiuShi” Distinguished Professors, Leading Talents in humanities, and several top-level experts in Zhejiang Province, making it a talent hub for the field of humanities at the university.During years of development, the Institute has consistently adhered to the study of Classical Chinese Philology with traditional linguistics as its foundation, forming distinct research characteristics and five stable research direction, namely Compilation and research of pre-Qin documents, Language research on documents from the Han, Wei, and Six Dynasties periods, Dunhuang Studies research, Song Studies research, Compilation and research of overseas Chinese classics and local documents.

Chinese Language Studies Zhejiang University
The Institute of Chinese Language Studies Zhejiang University was established in 1998. Its predecessor was the two teaching and research offices of the Chinese Department of Hangzhou University, namely Ancient Chinese Literature Teaching and Research Office and Modern Chinese Language Teaching and Research Office. The institute currently has two secondary disciplines: Chinese Philology, as well as Linguistics and Applied Linguistics.The discipline of Chinese Philology is a provincial key discipline in Zhejiang Province. Pioneering scholars such as Jiang Lihong, Guo Zaiyi, Wang Weixian, and Ni Baoyuan laid a solid foundation for the development of the discipline, passing on their expertise to the next generation. The discipline of Linguistics and Applied Linguistics was established at the end of the last century and the beginning of this century, and its development momentum is also very promising.After years of development, research areas such as medieval Chinese studies, history of Chinese vocabulary, rhetorical vocabulary studies in Chinese, modern Chinese grammar, and Chinese dialect research at the Institute of Chinese Language Studies have all had a significant impact in academic circles.

Literature and Art Studies Zhejiang University
The Institute of Literature and Art Studies Zhejiang University was established in 1998. Literature Theory is a provincial key discipline in Zhejiang Province and was granted the authority to confer doctoral degrees in 1998.The academic research in this discipline holds an important position nationwide. Mr. Wang Yuanxiang's foundational theories in literature and art studies and his research in Marxist literary theory are distinctive in the academic community and have had a profound influence, laying a solid foundation and excellent traditions for the discipline's development.In recent years, the Institute of Literature and Art Studies has made significant progress in foundational theories of literature and art, comparative poetics, Western literary theory, and other fields, attracting widespread attention in academic circles.

The Institute of Ancient Chinese Literature and Culture Zhejiang University was established in 1999. The discipline of Ancient Chinese Literature was granted the authority to confer doctoral degrees in 1986. Through the efforts of esteemed predecessors such as Xia Chengtiao, Wang Huanlian, Hu Shiyin, Xu Shuofang, Wu Xionghe, and others, the institute has established a good academic tradition. Its overall level is leading among similar disciplines nationwide and enjoys high reputation both domestically and internationally.In recent years, the Institute of Ancient Chinese Literature and Culture has continuously expanded its research in areas such as Chu Ci and literature of the Wei, Jin, Southern and Northern Dynasties, Tang and Song literature and ci studies, Ming dynasty poetry and prose research, and research on ancient drama and fiction, making significant impact in the academic circles with fruitful results.

Modern and Contemporary Chinese Literature and Culture of Zhejiang University
The Institute of Modern and Contemporary Chinese Literature and Culture of Zhejiang University was established in 1999. It is a national-level teaching team and the leading unit of“Double First-Class” courses designated by the Ministry of Education.It is a provincial key discipline with the authority to confer doctoral degrees.Under the leadership of several generations of scholars such as Zhang Zhongfu, Lv Moye, Zheng Zekui, Chen Jian, and Zhang Songnan, the discipline has established a research framework focused on modern writers from Zhejiang supplemented by the study of novels, poetry and film and television.In the past decade, building on its existing foundation, the institute has seen new developments and has formed four distinct research directions: the history and materials research of modern and contemporary Chinese literature, the research on Zhejiang culture and modern writers from Zhejiang, and the research on contemporary Chinese drama and film(including animation).

The institution of World Literature and Comparative literature of Zhejiang University was established in December 1999. The discipline has the authority to confer doctoral degrees, and currently has four doctoral supervisors. The main research directions of this discipline include studies on European and American poetry, comparative studies of Chinese and Western novels, and research on comparative poetics.
