The Institute of Chinese Language Studies Zhejiang University was established in 1998. Its predecessor was the two teaching and research offices of the Chinese Department of Hangzhou University, namely Ancient Chinese Literature Teaching and Research Office and Modern Chinese Language Teaching and Research Office. The institute currently has two secondary disciplines: Chinese Philology, as well as Linguistics and Applied Linguistics.

The discipline of Chinese Philology is a provincial key discipline in Zhejiang Province. Pioneering scholars such as Jiang Lihong, Guo Zaiyi, Wang Weixian, and Ni Baoyuan laid a solid foundation for the development of the discipline, passing on their expertise to the next generation. The discipline of Linguistics and Applied Linguistics was established at the end of the last century and the beginning of this century, and its development momentum is also very promising.

After years of development, research areas such as medieval Chinese studies, history of Chinese vocabulary, rhetorical vocabulary studies in Chinese, modern Chinese grammar, and Chinese dialect research at the Institute of Chinese Language Studies have all had a significant impact in academic circles.
